Fabric of the Community
Entered by Brothers and Sisters
Grenfell Athletic is a community football club, founded after the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire, to provide hope, positivity and family through sport. We created the Fabric of the Community project as a way of giving the survivors and bereaved a degree of closure and a platform to tell their personal stories. We used technology to turn a football shirt into a biographical record of a community. We asked 30 of the survivors and bereaved of the Grenfell tragedy to donate fabric with special emotional meaning to them. Some donated the shirts they were wearing when they escaped the fire. We cut these shirts up and incorporated a patch into the design of the new shirt. We hid an NFC chip inside each patch, and when the wearer passes their phone over it, it triggers a web page where the patch donor tells you what that fabric means to them.
