Details of the National Lottery Newham London Anniversary Run, a  running event staged in the heart of the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, have been announced with entries now open for 10,000 people.

The run will return to London’s newest park on Sunday 20th July, following last year’s run – the first event to be held in the Olympic Stadium since the Closing Ceremony of London 2012.

The event is being staged by Nova International, on behalf of Newham Council and supported by The National Lottery.

The landscape will vary slightly from the views of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, following the redevelopment of the Park that has been taking place since the event two years ago.

The course will take runners close to many of the remaining Olympic venues, such as the Lee Valley VeloPark, London Aquatics Centre and the Copper Box Arena, as well as views of the ArcelorMIttal Orbit, East Village and new parklands and riverways.

However, this year’s event will not include a run within the former Olympic Stadium as the venue is currently being redeveloped, but anyone who successfully gains entry into ‘The National Lottery Newham London Anniversary Run’ on 20th July will also be given ‘Priority Entry’ to gain a place in the 2015 event, which will once again finish in the Stadium.

Brendan Foster, chairman of Nova International, said: ‘The National Lottery Newham London Anniversary Run on 20 July will give people a wonderful experience of running in the newly-developed Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The event is bound to reignite many fantastic memories of London 2012 and we are working to make this event one of our best ever.’

10,000 people will be able to take part in the ‘The National Lottery Newham London Anniversary Run’ which will be staged over a five-mile distance – while 2,000 people will be able to participate in the 1.5-mile ‘Family Run’.

Meanwhile, Newham Council has committed to ensuring a lasting legacy from London 2012 and has secured 1,000 adult and 300 family places for its residents to take part in the event for free.

Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of the London Borough of Newham, added:

‘I promised residents they would benefit from the legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games. That means new jobs, new homes and new community spaces. ‘The National Lottery Newham London Anniversary Run’ is an important part of that showcasing all Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has to offer and helping to deliver on my commitment to provide a lasting legacy for all Newham residents.’

‘I am pleased to announce over 1,000 free places are available for Newham residents to take part in ‘The National Lottery Newham London Anniversary Run’. This is a fantastic offer which demonstrates how the council is making the legacy of the 2012 Games real. These places will ensure residents can participate for free in a unique run which will take in some of the most iconic locations from the Games, as well as encouraging them to lead an active and healthy life.’
