Absolute Radio has secured the commentary rights to American football, which will see the network air live coverage of Super Bowl XLVIII in the UK, as part of a new broadcast deal with NFL UK.

Under the agreement the network’s Absolute Radio 90s station will carry live commentary of one NFL game every Sunday this season, starting on 8th September with the Green Bay Packers’ trip to the San Francisco 49ers.

Live coverage of the NFL’s two International Series games at London’s Wembley Stadium – Pittsburgh Steelers v Minnesota Vikings on 29th September and San Francisco 49ers v Jacksonville Jaguars on 27th October – will also be provided by the station.

Furthermore, live coverage of next year’s Super Bowl, to be played at New York’s MetLife Stadium on Sunday 2nd February, will be provided by the network’s main, Absolute Radio station.

The announcement follows the news that Channel 4 will replace BBC as the new terrestrial home of the sport in the UK, after confirming the new deal earlier this week.

Commentator Darren Fletcher said: ‘Absolute Radio’s already showed its sporting credentials with the brilliant Rock ‘N’ Roll Football and this is a great move for the station. NFL is an amazing spectacle and I’m really looking forward to the Wembley games and the Super Bowl.  Absolute Radio listeners are going to love hearing all the action from America’s biggest sport.’

Alistair Kirkwood, the managing director of NFL UK, added: ‘This is a very exciting development and we are very pleased to welcome Absolute Radio to the NFL family. We are a growing, dynamic sport and our popularity in the UK has never been higher. Absolute is a great partner for us and will help us to reach out to many new fans.’
