Sportswear brand adidas has appointed Gavin Thomson as the new managing director for North Europe, as part of the creation of a new Western Europe region, and will take the leadership role for UK and Ireland, Benelux and the Nordics.

Gavin Thomson, who has been senior vice-president of global sales at the Wholesale Centre of Excellence at adidas Group since October 2011, will take up his new role on 1st January 2014. He will take over from and report into Gil Steyaert, who has been promoted to the new position of managing director for Western Europe.

Thomson has worked for adidas for 18 years and was sales director for adidas UK for six years until 2011. Before that he held several national account manager roles and was a product marketing director for five years.

Thomson said of the appointment: ‘I am thrilled to be coming back to the UK to take on this position and I am re-joining the North Europe region at an exciting time. 2014 promises to be a special year for the brand for so many reasons, with anticipation already building around the World Cup. As an official FIFA partner, that will of course be a real area of focus.’

‘The business is in great shape following the brilliant London Olympics last year and I look forward to continuing the fantastic work that Gil and his team have been doing.’

Meanwhile, Steyaert joined the adidas Group in 1999 as joint managing director for France and has been managing director for North Europe since 2003.
