Lee Daley, the chief executive and chairman of advertising agency Saatchi &
Saatchi, has been appointed as the new commercial director for Manchester
United.
Daley will leave the advertising industry in mid-April to take up his post at
Old Trafford replacing predecessor Andy Anson who left the post earlier this
month to join men’s tennis governing body the ATP as chief executive.
In his new role, Daley will sit on the board of directors alongside chairman
David Gill and incoming chief operating officer Michael Bolingbroke who was
named last week. The rest of the Old Trafford club board is made up of members
of US owners the Glazer family.
The appointment of Daley will come as a surprise to many with media
speculation last month placing former BA commercial director Martin George as
the frontrunner to take the United job.
Daley has an extensive advertising history, joining Saatchis as the chief
executive in October 2004 having previously served as the global chief executive
of Red Cell.
The recruitment process for the post was handled by Odgers Sport
Practice.
