San Francisco has moved a step closer to hosting the 34th America’s Cup after city officials agreed a deal with the Golden Gate Yacht Club.

The Golden Gate Yacht Club is a backer of America’s Cup team BMW Oracle Racing, and San Francisco city officials have now come to an agreement to host the historic race.

The Golden Gate Yacht Club spokesperson Tom Ehman confirmed that this year’s host Valencia is no longer in the running to host the 2013 race – which leaves only San Francisco and an unknown port from Italy vying to become hosts.

A host city agreement was submitted to San Francisco’s board of supervisors, which must approve it before any deal could be finalised.

The board voted 9-2 last month to approve an offer and six supervisors are co-sponsors of the agreement, which also pledges civic help in raising $270m to help cover costs of staging the event.

Britain’s Team Origin will not challenge for the next America’s Cup, scheduled for 2013 after BMW Oracle unveiled a controversial raft of new ideas and rules – leading to the team withdrawing from the race.
