Andy Murray finally ended a 76 year wait for a British man to win a Grand Slam title after defeating Novak Djokovic in five-sets to claim his first major of his career, in a match that was watched in the UK by a peak of 1.5m people, despite a finish time of past 2am GMT.
The 25 year-old, who also won Olympic gold and silver at London 2012 in the men’s singles and mixed doubles respectively, becomes the first British man to win a Grand Slam title since Fred Perry in 1936, who won the last of his eight majors at the US Open, exactly 76 years ago.
The US Open was the Scot’s fifth Grand Slam final, but had lost them all – picking up a just one set in all the finals combined before last night, at Wimbledon 2012, when he lost to Roger Federer.
The peak of 1.5m viewers was seen on Sky Sports, with an average viewership of 900,000.
