Road cycling world champion Lizzie Armitstead has joined indoor bike creators, Wattbike, as ambassador.

In the 2008/09 season, Armitstead won nine gold medals in the World Cup series, followed by a world champion title in the team pursuit. As well track success, she has major achievements on the road, retaining the UCI Women Road World Cup and winning both the British and World Road Race during the 2015 season.

According to the brand, the indoor bike replicates the feel of the road whilst providing performance data, as well combing with digital technology and training support.

Speaking about her new ambassadorial role, Lizzie commented: “I’m incredibly excited to be working with the Wattbike team. I have used Wattbikes for testing and I’m looking forward to integrating the equipment fully into my training schedule. The difference between success and failure in cycling can come down to minute training details. The Wattbike’s level of measurability, reliability and accuracy allows me to monitor my training and progress in such detail that it makes a significant contribution to my performance success.

“Having a Wattbike at home will allow me to complete really specific sessions that I simply can’t do on a turbo trainer and will help me to make even more improvements in 2016.”

The 27-year-old added: “The Wattbike will be an instrumental tool in my training in the run up to Rio as I have some very specific training goals. Wattbike will enable me to accurately monitor my power outputs, train in the optimal zones in a controlled environment and measure my progress to ensure every session pushes my performance forwards.

“I have chosen to use a Wattbike because it offers a really realistic ride experience which feels like riding on the road and I know that no matter what I throw at the bike, it will be able to stand up to the demands of the high intensity sessions. I don’t want to leave anything to chance and I know I can rely on the Wattbike.”

Wattbike’s commercial director, Richard Baker commented: “We’re thrilled to be working with Lizzie. It’s a big year for both her and women’s cycling, and we hope draw on some of her experiences and support her in the best way we can; providing quality data and accurate tracking for her. Lizzie has an incredible drive, commitment and work ethic; she’s a fantastic role model and fit for Wattbike and we look forward to what the coming year holds.”
