Arsenal’s board has reached a voluntary agreement with the club’s first-team players, head coach and senior coaching staff to take a 12.5% pay cut to support the club through the coronavirus pandemic.
The club says that the reduction of total annual earnings will come into effect in April, with the contractual paperwork still to be completed.
However, Arsenal have also confirmed that subject to meeting specific targets in the seasons ahead – which are primarily linked to on-pitch success – the club will repay agreed amounts to players.
In a statement the club said, “The agreement is based on the assumption we will finish the season 2019/20 and receive the full broadcasting revenues. The resulting savings will help cover some of the financial risks we have this season in relation to our matchday and commercial income.
“We are proud and grateful to our players and staff for pulling together to support our club, our people and our community in these unprecedented times which are some of the most challenging we have faced in our history.”
In addition to the #PlayersTogether initiative, set up by Premier League footballers as a vehicle for donating funds to directly help the NHS, three other clubs in the division – Watford, Southampton and West Ham – have also wage deferrals with their first-team players.
