Arsenal has become the third most followed sports team in the world on Twitter after reaching five million followers, sitting behind Real Madrid with 14 million and FC Barcelona with 13.6 million.

The Gunners have taken just over five months to build their following from four million to five million through a continuous programme of content. This includes Twitter takeovers with players, Vine Q&As, match day coverage, breaking news and a series of infographics.

Richard Clarke, managing editor, Arsenal Media Group said: “We are delighted to have engaged so many passionate Arsenal fans around the world. The interest in the club continues to grow and we constantly evolve our approach to keep our fans engaged with what is happening across every aspect of the club. We will continue to work hard to produce engaging content during the course of 2015.”

Real Madrid’s Christiano Ronaldo is currently the world’s most popular footballer on Twitter with over 32.1 million followers, and Wayne Rooney became the first Premier League footballer to reach 10 million Twitter followers in October.

Arsenal may struggle to hold the lead in the UK. Adding over 4,000 new followers each day, Manchester United could soon catch up with Arsene Wenger’s side who add just under 2,400 on a daily basis.

The North London team are currently sixth in the league, 12 points behind leaders Chelsea. They’ll take on Queens Park Rangers at home on Friday 26th December.
