Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong is riding a series of artist- and designer-decorated bikes in this year’s race, to support the Lance Armstrong Foundation and its Livestrong cancer campaign.
Marc Newson, Damien Hirst, Kaws, Yoshimoto Nara, Kenny Scharf and Shepard Fairey are all contributing designs to the various bikes Armstrong is using.
Newson’s design was used in the Monaco time trial, which kicked off this year’s Tour de France on 4th July, while Hirst’s bike, which features a butterfly design, will be used for the final stage in Paris on 26th July.
A touring art exhibition, Stages, will open in Paris on 16th July, featuring work by artists including Fairey, Caroline Opie and Ed Ruscha, and inspired by Armstrong’s battle against cancer. The exhibition will also visit New York, Los Angeles and Portland.
Armstrong, who survived testicular cancer and went on to win the Tour de France seven times, is currently ranked third in the race, eight seconds behind leader Rinaldo Nocentini.
