A golden summer for English cricket continued with the third test of the Specsavers Ashes series, as England beat Australia to tie the series, and the drama saw official sponsor Specsavers seize an unlikely moment in the spotlight.
Alongside centurion Ben Stokes – who was himself one of the heroes when England defeated New Zealand at Lord’s to win the ICC Cricket World Cup in July – was Jack Leach, the last man in England’s batting order who became an unlikely hero.
Leach managed to end the final innings not out on one run, and the glasses-wearing spin bowler became the perfect marketing fodder for Specsavers, who promised the England man free glasses for life after some Twitter prompting from Stokes.
We can confirm we will offer Jack Leach free glasses for life https://t.co/7rfPBK77GS

Specsavers is an official sponsor of English test cricket, with title billing for this Ashes series as well as branding around the boundary of the pitch. Another official sponsor, Hardy’s Wines also praised Leach with the winemaker awarding him a bottle normally reserved for those players who hit milestones such as centuries and five wicket hauls in an Ashes innings, despite his single run.
The thrilling nature of the finale to the Third Test saw 2.1m viewers tune into Sky Sports with a further 1.3m listening on BBC Radio, and the significance of the finish was not lost on the tournament’s sponsors.
