As part of a takeover deal, Aston Martin is to have a place in Formula 1 from 2021, as the Racing Point team is to become the Aston Martin works team.
The British automobile brand has been the subject of a £182 million investment from a consortium led by Canadian businessman and co-owner of the Racing Point team, Lawrence Stroll, which has seen them take a 16.7% stake in Aston Martin. Stroll will also become Aston Martin’s Executive Chairman.
As part of that investment, Racing Point – which was formerly the Force India team – then slated for a re-brand ahead of the start of F1’s ground-breaking 2021 season.
The move will see the Aston Martin name return to Formula 1 in a works capacity for the first time in 60 years, with Aston Martin having started five championship races in 1959-1960, with their best results a pair of sixth places at the 1959 British and Portuguese Grands Prix.
Stroll’s consortium took control of the Force India team, which eventually became Racing Point, before the start of the 2019 season. The team now includes Stroll’s 21-year-old son Lance alongside Sergio Perez.
The entry of the Aston Martin brand into the Formula 1 series will take place ahead of the 2021 reforms, which organisers expect to make the sport more competitive.
