Athletics is be given a Twenty20-style makeover according to media reports with the launch of a new Super 8 series to be staged in the evening over the course of the summer.
Governing body UKA is considering trialling the new concept, which will see city-based teams compete head-to-head in two-hour contests, at a meeting in Cardiff on 10th June.
If successful, the format will be rolled out in 2010 with the launch of an eight-team league. Athletes will line up for cities that they have an association with – place of birth, residence or some other connection – but each city will also be allowed to field two overseas stars.
It is hoped that cities will bid for the franchises and the right to host the events, which could be staged indoors or outdoors.
The events on the programme are believed to be in line with the disciplines that constitute the decathlon but there will also be a number of relays, including mixed medleys of varying distances.
The idea is the brainchild of UK chief executive Niels de Vos and former British shot putter Shaun Pickering with the governing body keen to give the sport a remodelled look to attract new fans, focusing on shorter, more TV-friendly events.
The proposals are likely to be discussed with athletes at this weekend’s Aviva Grand Prix in Birmingham with UKA’s existing sponsors thought to be given first right of refusal for the event.
