Newly appointed American Ryder Cup golf captain Paul Azinger has revamped the
qualification process for the US team for the 2008 event to be held in Valhalla,
Kentucky.
In his first announcement following his unveiling as the new US captain,
Azinger revealed that he has increased the number of wildcards that he gets to
name from 2 to 4 while points for the 8 automatic slots will now be based on
money earned as opposed to the number of top 10 finishes.
The move is likely to come in for criticism from a number of US PGA Tour
events whose status in the calendar, as important Ryder Cup qualification
tournaments, could be devalued due to them offering comparatively less prize
money to some of their counterparts.
The 37th Ryder Cup is scheduled to take place at from 16-21 September 2008.
Europe has won six of the last seven events.
