Formula One’s Bahrain Grand Prix has been cancelled because of anti-government protests and political unrest in the country.

The race, which has been in doubt for over a week, was due to open the new season on 13th March.

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone had left the decision concerning whether or not the race should go ahead, with Crown Prince Sheikh Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa.

The Crown Prince has since cancelled the race saying: ‘after the events of the past week, our nation’s priority is on overcoming tragedy, healing divisions and rediscovering the fabric that draws this country together; reminding the world of the very best that Bahrain is capable of as a nation once again united’.

The Formula One season will now begin with the Australian Grand Prix on 27th March.

The Bahrain race could still feature in the F1 calendar at a later date.

Ecclestone added: ‘it is sad that Bahrain has had to withdraw from the race, we wish the whole nation well as they begin to heal their country’.
