Barclays continued its support of community sports projects as it backed a StreetChance event in which famous cricketers joined youngsters for a street cricket match at the Westway Centre in West London.

A three-year programme launched last year by Barclays Spaces For Sports, along with Chance To Shine, Cricket for Change, the Metropolitan Police Service and Positive Futures, StreetChance is using cricket to engage youths from different backgrounds across 10 London boroughs, specifically targeting those affected by crime and anti-social behaviour.

The match at Westway saw legendary cricketers West Indian fast bowler Courtney Walsh and former England fast bowler Devon Malcolm give advice to the kids who were playing Street 20 cricket, which requires minimal equipment and gives everyone getting a chance to bat, bowl and field.

Barclays Spaces for Sports was created in an effort by the bank to invest in grassroots sport throughout the UK and overseas. Since beginning in 2004, the initiative has constructed more than 200 sites covering a range of sports, giving more than half a million disadvantaged people the opportunity to benefit.

The project is part of Barclays global community programme, which invested £52.4m across 52 countries last year.
