The Sport Industry NextGen Leaders continued their Leadership Package for 2016 by visiting Barclays’ global headquarters in London’s Canary Wharf to learn more about the daily workings and challenges of a global banking and financial services company.
Topics of discussion throughout the day included citizenship; diversity and inclusion in business; retail; marketing at Barclaycard and career development.
Diane Varrin Eshleman, global head of citizenship and reputation, started the day on shared growth ambition within business, explaining: “Shared growth is about making decisions and doing business that provides our clients, customers, shareholders and the communities we serve with access to a prosperous future.”
Mark Q. McLane, global head of diversity and inclusion, continued the morning with a conversation on the importance of adopting change at a senior leadership level and integrating it across the business through internal communications and campaigns closely aligned to external events, such as International Women’s Day and World Cultural Day.

“Change, particularly in technology, is constant and businesses need to keep up,” said Steven Cooper, chief executive officer, personal banking. Cooper spoke to the Sport Industry NextGen Leaders about commercial retail leadership, citing Barclays Mobile Banking as an example that has seen users grow from zero to 3.4m customer logins a day since London 2012.
Andrew Hogan, head of brand strategy & communication at Barclaycard delved into the secrets to success of a brand marketing campaign, before Nathan Homer, head of global sponsorship at Barclays, discussed career planning with the group.
Speaking on the day, Homer commented: “The reaction from the Leaders is exactly what we hoped. Despite the diversity across the speakers and the topics that they are experts in, there were still some common themes that the Leaders were able to pull out from them. It was obvious that they were valuable thinking points for them to take back and apply in their current roles, as well as leaders in their own organisations.”
The workshop was another instalment of the Leadership Package that the 2016 Sport Industry NextGen Leaders are receiving throughout the year, which also includes an executive leadership workshop at Loughborough University London, a 24 hour leadership experience with the Inspirational Development Group at Sandhurst, an annual VIP pass to the Inspired Leaders Network, membership to the Sport Industry Breakfast Club 2016, and more.
