The BBC is to screen archive footage of a range of sporting events throughout the spring and summer as it looks to fill the void that cancellations have left in the broadcast schedule.

The broadcaster has announced plans to screen some of the best moments from Euro 96 this summer, as well as highlights from London 2012 – including Super Saturday, when Team GB won six gold medals in their most successful day since 1908 – and Rio 2016 and the World Snooker Championships.

With no football taking place in its traditional slot of 3pm on Saturdays, the BBC Sport website and iPlayer will stream matches of some of the games in its archive as part of a weekly ‘Rewind’ series. The broadcaster will also continue with Football Focus and Match of the Day, which has taken on a new format based around a podcast hosted by Gary Lineker. BBC’s football pundits will also choose their favourite matches from years gone by with snippets airing straight after the Match of the Day Top 10 podcast

In early July, the broadcaster will screen some of the greatest moments from Wimbledon to run in place of the cancelled 2020 tournament, with some of the classic matches from over the years – including Andy Murray ending the UK’s 77 year wait for a men’s single champion.

Director of Sport, Barbara Slater said: “In these unprecedented and difficult times we are delighted to bring some of the most incredible sporting events from years gone by to our audiences over the next few months. From glorious moments at the Olympic Games including the magic of London 2012, thrilling Euro ’96 matches, wonderful Wimbledon moments and the best of World Championship snooker, there is something for everyone to enjoy.”

The BBC has also confirmed that iPlayer will play host to a number of sporting documentaries over the coming months, available to watch on-demand, including programmes about John McEnroe, Emiliano Sala and Shane Williams.
