The BBC and mobile network operator EE tested new mobile apps during Saturday’s FA Cup final between Arsenal and Aston Villa.
4G broadcast technology was used to offer instant replays to fans watching inside Wembley Stadium.
EE, a stadium sponsor, connected multiple devices to a singular broadcast stream of live footage over its 4G mobile network, giving spectators the opportunity to watch multiple camera angles and replays using tablets. The service was available through a custom-built application.
The trial successfully worked with 20 devices, with a public service is planned for 2016.
The two companies first trialled 4G Broadcast at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last year. In that trial, several streams were offered to mobile devices reflecting the coverage on BBC1, BBC3, and the BBC’s red button service.
