Channel 4 has given up the rights to the 2013 World Athletics Championships meaning the BBC will broadcast next year’s event.
The BBC already has rights to broadcast the World Championships in 2015 and 2017, with the latter set to be staged in London’s Olympic Stadium.
Channel 4 had originally agreed a deal to broadcast the 2013 Moscow Championships but has ceded the rights to the BBC in order to concentrate on other events including its expanded coverage of horse racing. Earlier this year, Channel 4 signed a four-year contract with Racecourse Media Group that will see it broadcast all British horse racing exclusively until December 2016.
Barbara Slater, the BBC’s director of sport, commented: ‘Added to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and the Rio Olympics in 2016 it will take the BBC audience on an athletics journey from London 2012 to London 2017.’
