BBC Radio 5 Live has acquired the live UK radio commentary rights for this year’s Rugby World Cup.
The exclusive deal means live World Cup commentary will return to BBC Radio, after TalkSport won the exclusive UK radio rights to the last edition four years ago.
Coverage will begin with the opening game of the tournament, England versus Fiji, at Twickenham on Friday 18th September.
World Rugby chief executive Brett Gosper said: “World Rugby is excited about the appointment of the BBC as the rights-holding radio broadcaster for Rugby World Cup 2015 in England, which promises to be a very special record-breaking celebration of rugby.
“The BBC’s passion for our sport, combined with their commitment to the highest-standards of production is great news for fans and also rugby’s ability to reach out and inspire new audiences.”
BBC head of radio sport Richard Burgess added: “We’re really pleased to be able to offer fans extensive commentary and coverage of Rugby World Cup 2015 across BBC radio and mobile output, giving audiences across the UK access to a wealth of content wherever they are. Our radio commentary is second to none and we’re looking forward to what will be a very exciting tournament.”
