David Beckham is set to exercise his option to own a Major League Soccer franchise, after reportedly selecting Miami as the base for his new side.

Beckham played for LA Galaxy between 2007-12 – with his contract including an option to buy a franchise at a discounted rate of $25 million (£15.5m) – and the team could be playing in as little as three years’ time, with the MLS set to expand over the next few years, moving from 19 to 24 teams by 2020.

Business partner Simon Fuller will also be a significant shareholder of the franchise, according to the Associated Press.

MLS executive vice-president Dan Courtemanche told the AP: ‘We know that Miami is one of the most passionate soccer markets in north America. We have met with David Beckham regarding ownership of an expansion team, and we look forward to David one day owning an MLS club.’

The former Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and LA Galaxy midfielder still requires final approval from the League to operate the franchise in Miami, and is now attempting to raise significant investment to fund the running costs, which will eventually include the construction of a new stadium.

The 38 year-old opted for Miami as the location for his franchise after considering Montreal, San Diego and Orlando as alternative locations.
