Former England captain David Beckham’s proposed loan move to Italian side AC Milan is likely to net the team close to £10m in additional commercial revenue according to industry estimates.
Beckham was revealed to be in talks with AC Milan regarding a loan move from US side LA Galaxy running until next March. The Major League Soccer season ends this weekend and doesn’t begin again until March and Beckham is keen to continue playing regularly during the off-season in order to retain his place in the England squad.
Although Beckham’s prospective move to Italy will only last a few months, industry experts suggest it will have an immediate impact on ticket sales, sponsorship deals, merchandise, TV revenues and promotional activity for his Milan paymasters.
Professor Simon Chadwick, commenting on behalf of Weber Shandwick Sport, said: ‘Brand Beckham is still a global phenomenon and even in these difficult economic times his star appeal in parts of the world such as the Middle East and Asia will see AC Milan netting up to £10m, just for a short stay. Many of the world’s finest footballers have represented the Rossoneri, but Beckham is in his own league when it comes to global impact.’
Professor Chadwick is the Founder and Director of the Centre for the International Business of Sport at Coventry University.
