After proving that it could successfully host a world-renowned event, Beijing has announced that it will bid to host the 2015 athletics World Championships.
Media reports have revealed that after the city’s sports authority contacted International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) officials in Berlin last month, the world athletics governing body will now travel to Beijing to check facilities within the next month.
Unused for athletics since last summer, the now legendary ‘Bird’s Nest’ Stadium built for the 2008 Olympics would play a part in the event, should Beijing win the bid.
Other contenders to host the 2015 event include Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro. The 2011 World Championships will be in Daegu, South Korea and Moscow in 2013.
