The British Horseracing Authority takes over the regulation and promotion of
horse racing today – a unified body combining the remit of the British
Horseracing Board and the Horseracing Regulatory Authority.
The merging of the powers of the BHB and HRA under a single body is seen as a
major step in the modernisation of the sport which is second only to football in
terms of revenues and attendances.
The BHA will be headed by former Football Association executive Nic Coward in
the role of chief executive with Paul Roy named as chairman of the new body.
Alongside the chairman and chief Executive will sit the remainder of the
eight-strong board, which has a strong emphasis on independence and
decision-making in the best interests of British horse racing as an industry.
The launch of the new body also coincides with the creation of an online
directory of the sport’s orders and rules on www.britishhorseracing.com. For
the first time, the regulations under which the sport is run, regulated and
administered are accessible on a fully searchable and easy to navigate website.
