FIFA president Sepp Blatter has defended the choice to choose Qatar as the hosts of the 2022 World Cup despite concerns over gay football fans.
Gay rights groups have strongly criticised FIFA’s decision to award the World Cup to a country where homosexuality is illegal and have voiced concerns over the safety of homosexual fans.
When pressed on the issue the FIFA president tried to laugh it off saying: ‘I would say they should refrain from any sexual activities.’
Blatter added: ‘I’m sure when the World Cup will be in Qatar there will be no problems. You see in the Middle East the opening of this culture, it’s another culture because it’s another religion, but in football we have no boundaries.’
‘We open everything to everybody and I think there shall not be any discrimination against any human beings be it on this side or that side, be it left, right or whatever.’
‘If they want to watch a match somewhere in Qatar 2022, I’m sure they will be admitted to such matches.’
Qatar won the right to host the tournament after beating Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United States at the FIFA Executive vote on 2nd December.
FIFA has come under string criticism for the choice as players will have to play in searing heat of 40C to 50C and public alcohol consumption is currently illegal.
