Square Mile Sport has announced the latest expansion of its global series, with Hong Kong set to join the growing list of international cities taking on the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay that already includes London and Singapore.
The event has run in London since 2007 and attracts more than 100 teams to the streets of London and over 150 teams to the streets of Singapore every year.
Over 1,000 runners will take to the start-line in Guildhall Yard on 4th September 2014, with a limited number of teams still available for the London leg – find out more here.
The new Hong Kong event will be staged on Thursday, 6th November 2014, with runners, from corporate teams of 10, each taking it in turn to race an unconventional one-mile (1.6km) course around Edinburgh Place in Central.
Starting and finishing from Edinburgh Place, the race will see participants dash between some of the landmark buildings in Hong Kong’s iconic financial district as teams compete to clock the fastest cumulative time for 10 one-mile laps. The event will culminate in a celebratory post-race party, where the winning team will be awarded a HK$80,000 cheque to be donated to charity, and runners along with supporters will enjoy food, drink and live entertainment.
Hong Kong marks the second leg of the Square Mile Relay series’ international expansion, after launching in Singapore last year. The race is developed in partnership with Unleash Foundation and Agency for Volunteer Service, and sponsored by Bloomberg, the global business and financial information and news leader.
‘Bloomberg is proud to bring the Square Mile Relay to Hong Kong, one of the world’s leading business and financial hubs,’ said Mark Flatman, Bloomberg’s Head of Asia Pacific. ‘The choice of Hong Kong as the next stop for the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay was a logical one and underscores our commitment to the region. It’s also a way for us to show our gratitude and give back to the community.’
In addition to the winning team’s charity cheque, the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay is partnering with Unleash Foundation and Agency for Volunteer Service. ‘Through this programme, the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay aims not only to unearth sporting talents from the business community, but also to bring the best community spirit out of the city and also leave a legacy in the community through the work and donations from the event’, said Nelson Yip, founder of Unleash Foundation.
