The Amateur Boxing Association of England has launched a new campaign to beat knife-crime by persuading youngsters to take up boxing.
The initiative, supported by football pundit Alan Shearer and England striker Michael Owen, is called Gloves Not Guns, Gangs or Knives and encouraging youngsters into the boxing ring instead of the street.
The ABAE is looking to raise funds from commercial organisations to improve facilities in ABAE affiliated gyms and clubs and ensure that youths spend less time on the streets and more time in sport.
Sam Rush, a director of the ABAE and European Chief Operating Officer for sports marketing agency Wasserman Media Group, commented: ‘We’ve all got a part to play and those who have any profile in sport can make a big noise and make a difference.
‘We have eight British boxing representatives in the Beijing Olympics and our record in boxing and producing champions is fantastic. They are kids who may be tempted to cross to the wrong side of the tracks but boxing offers an energy channel, a sense of self worth and discipline.
‘These kids suddenly find there is a meaning to their life or a structure and all that aggression or anti-social behaviour is directed into the boxing ring.
‘There are also other benefits like being healthy and active and encouraging other youngsters to follow their examples. We want everyone to wake up to their own responsibilities and support this campaign.’
