Sir Dave Brailsford has quit as British Cycling performance director, bringing an end to one of the most successful reigns in British sport, with his management duties at Team Sky to become his principal focus.
Brailsford originally joined British Cycling in 1997 not long after Lottery funding began, assuming greater responsibility under the then head Peter Keen before taking over as performance director in 2003.
The 50 year-old holds a similar position with pro-cycling outfit Team Sky, missing last month’s Track Cycling World Championships to focus on that role, and has overseen back-to-back Tour de France wins for Sir Bradley Wiggins in 2012 and Chris Froome the following year.
2014 represents a busy period for Team Sky, who will set out to defend Froome’s title at the Tour de France in July, and will also open a performance centre in the south of France.
