Although F1 team Brawn GP confirmed its first sponsor in Richard Branson’s Virgin Group at the season-opener, the newly formed team has announced it is cutting more than 250 jobs.
Despite the speculation around making about a third of its workforce redundant, the announcement that Honda was pulling out in December put the entire workforce at risk of losing their jobs.
After winning the top two spots at the Australian Grand Prix – the most successful debut performance in more than 50 years – Brawn GP reported that the job losses are due the team working on a smaller budget after a management buyout saved the former Honda F1 Team.
Additionally, the change in F1 rules, which sees a new scheme to crown the world champion as well as a ban of testing between the start of the season and the end of the year, also requires fewer staff.
This announcement came soon after Richard Branson confirmed its partnership deal with the new Brawn GP. The Virgin Group has also claimed that it will be looking into possibly becoming a title sponsor.
