Former England captain Mike Brearley has been named as the new president of
Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
The 65-year old Brearley, whose spell as captain saw England defeat Australia
in the 1981 Ashes, will begin his one-year term of office on 1st October.
Brearley led England in 31 Tests, and captained Middlesex between 1971 and
1982, when his team won the County Championship on four occasions.
After his retirement as a player, Brearley wrote an acclaimed book, ‘The Art
of Captaincy’, and has since become a leading sports psychoanalyst, also writing
regularly on cricket for The Observer.
Brearley succeeds the incumbent MCC president Doug Insole.
