British boxing governing body ABA has fired chief coach Terry Edwards, much to the surprise of many involved in the sport.

Edwards led Team GB to one of its most successful Olympic boxing performances in Beijing, bringing home three medals, including a gold for the middleweight James DeGale.

The sack reportedly came as a shock to the coach, who allegedly claimed that he was close to making a new deal with ABA that would keep him at the helm of the British team through to the2012 London Olympics.

Relations between Edwards and the ABA have been tense since the lightweight Frankie Gavin, one of Britain’s top hopes for a medal, was sent home before the Games began because he failed to make weight – something he claimed to have expressed having difficulties with to Edwards.

Boxing star DeGale has stated publicly his anger for the ABA’s move against Edwards, which continues a very public row between the middleweight and the governing body.

A replacement for Edwards has yet to be announced, but Richie Woodhall, a middleweight bronze medallist at the 1988 Olympics and sport commentator, is reportedly one of the most probable candidates.
