BSkyB’s sports content continues to play a vital role in the broadcaster’s growth as its subscriber base passes 8 million.
In the broadcaster’s first quarter results released today, the return of the football season helped BSkyB sign up an additional 82,000 TV subscribers taking its total customer base to 8.26 million.
The continued growth of the Sky+ service continued to beat the company’s expectations with the package now taken by 20% of households receiving the satellite broadcaster’s programming.
The launch of Sky’s ‘free’ broadband subscription in July also boosted the financial results. Sky said by the end of October it had received around 1m registrations of interest from customers and 113,000 actual orders, of which 74,000 had been connected so far.
The company’s total revenues grew by 11% year-on-year to £1.07bn, the biggest first quarter rise for Sky in the last three years.
