Bt Looks To Offer Cheaper Content

Telecoms brand BT wants to offer its customers cheaper access to premium sports events in the wake of increasing regulatory pressure on pay-TV broadcasters to lower their prices.

The telecoms firm is awaiting the outcome of an Ofcom probe that is examining whether pay-TV broadcasters such as Sky will have to drop the wholesale price it charges competitors for content.

If Ofcom decides that Sky has to cut its prices, it would mean that the likes of BT and Virgin Media could pass on any price cuts to their customers.

BT Vision would aim to charge about £15 a month for Sky Sports 1 whereas Sky currently charges around £25 a month.

However, if Ofcom did enforce wholesale price cuts, Sky have revealed that they would appeal against the decision. They also believe that the quality of programmes would decrease if less money were available.

Sky is currently way ahead of its competitors in terms of subscriptions. Sky has 9.5m subscribers, Virgin has 3.7m and BT Vision has 436,000.

The outcome of the investigation by the regulator will be known in March.
