Premiership Rugby has confirmed that UK broadcaster BT Sport will show the first edition of the World Club Sevens in August, after acquiring the TV rights to the rugby event at Twickenham Stadium.
The agreement, struck between the sports network and Premiership Rugby, will see BT Sport provide three hours of live coverage on Saturday 17th August and five and a half hours of live coverage the following day.
The 12-team invitational tournament will feature sevens teams from England, the US, South Africa, Russia, Australia and New Zealand, with the aim to expand in 2014 and 2015 as rugby sevens heads towards its Olympic debut at the Rio Games in 2016.
Dominic Hayes, Premiership Rugby’s commercial director, said: ‘We are delighted that BT Sport are showing the World Club Sevens live. It’s an indication of the pace the tournament is gathering pace on a daily basis.’
‘BT Sport will broadcast three hours live on Saturday followed by five and a half hours on Sunday starting with ACT Brumbies against Auckland, as the competition reaches a crescendo.’
Simon Green, head of BT Sport, added: ‘BT Sport is the new home of rugby union and we are delighted to be showing world class sevens to kick off our rugby coverage. Rugby union is entering a thrilling phase and we will be bringing the very best of the action to our viewers.’
Earlier this month, Harlequins announced that they would also be taking part in the inaugural competition.
