Ericsson has announced BT Sport as its first client for Piero Augmented Reality, its software system aimed at sports programming.

BT Sport will begin using the software for rugby coverage, with Piero allowing the broadcaster to overlay 3D graphics in real-time during live studio production. Graphics can be created instantly via an operator or tablet, with the graphics then projecting onto the floor.

The software was first tested on BBC’s Match of the Day (pictured) and is part of Ericsson’s Piero product suite of real-time sports graphics software, integrating with studio tracking systems and sports data services from other firms.

Analysts will have the ability to stand with the 3D projections of athletes, with other features allowing BT Sport presenters to create heat maps and trigger 3D fly-arounds from a tablet.

“We’re always looking to enhance and improve the quality of our coverage and presentation and are excited to be working with Ericsson and to be the first to use Piero Augmented Reality, we think this brand new technology will enhance our coverage and analysis and ultimately the viewer experience,” said Jamie Hindhaugh, COO, BT Sport.

“Piero Augmented Reality allows broadcasters to go beyond rudimentary, pre-built 2D graphics and bring events to life through data-driven stories for even more compelling viewing and create deeper engagement through stunning artistry,” Thorsten Sauer, Ericsson, head of broadcast and media services, said in a statement.
