BT’s television business achieved its best quarterly performance in two years in the first quarter, as live television rights for Champions League and Europa League football matches helped encourage 60,000 new customers to switch on.
Daily viewing figures for BT Sport were also up 50% in the three months to June, covering the end of the 2014/15 season.
Ahead of the kick off to the 2015/16 Premier League season, the telecoms brand said 100,000 customers had signed up in the three months to 30th June, while 217,000 more had taken its superfast fibre broadband service.
Core earnings rose 1% to £1.45bn on flat underlying revenue of £4.28bn.
BT’s consumer business reported its sixth consecutive quarter of revenue and profit growth, with a 7% increase in broadband and TV sales.
Gavin Patterson, chief executive, said: “This is an exciting time at BT.” He hailed the rise in its TV customer base to 1.2m and signs of a strong start to its mobile offerings.
The company also agreed this year to buy EE, the UK’s largest mobile group, for £12.5bn.
