Oakley has announced the addition of reigning Masters champion Bubba Watson to its array of professional golfers who use the company’s performance golf apparel, in a move believed to be a replacement for outgoing star Rory McIlroy, who is on the verge of signing a mega deal with Nike, according to media reports.
Nike confirmed earlier this week that the brand would be making an announcement on 14th January in Abu Dhabi, expected to be the confirmation of the world number one as a Nike athlete.
Watson said of the deal: ‘I’m proud to join their family because they love the game and they never stop pushing technology to make the game better. Whatever they can do — whatever can be done — Oakley will do it. I respect that. They respect the game as much as I do, and they take good care of their family. That’s why I’m happy to join them.’
Scott Bowers, SVP of global marketing and brand development at Oakley, said: ‘We are honored to welcome Bubba to the Oakley Golf family. He is a Masters Champion who fuels excitement with amazing drives and unbelievable shot making, and his personality brings a whole new flavor to the game.’
A native of Florida, Watson turned pro in 2001 and played on the Nationwide Tour until 2005. His first PGA Tour victory was in 2010, and his second came the following year.
Oakley welcomed the new recruit to the team with an online video, watch it here on Sport Industry TV.
Watson parts ways with Travis Mathew, and has a career high of fourth place in the Official World Golf Ranking and is the 2012 Masters Champion.
