Bupa has extended its sponsorship of UK Sport to continue as its Official Health Insurance Partner until March 2014.

The partnership began in 2011 and the renewal will see the healthcare firm continue to provide medical insurance to elite athletes as part of UK Sport’s Athlete Medical Scheme which covers 1,300 elite athletes across the UK.

The UK Sport World Class Performance Programme will invest £370m to develop elite sport in the country with the ultimate aim of producing medals at the Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics.

The managing director of Bupa health funding, Damien Marmion, said of the renewal: ‘Bupa’s continued partnership with UK Sport shows that our health insurance continues to be relied upon by the UK’s best athletes including Olympians and Paralympians. This relationship spans over a decade, during a time when we’ve produced some of our best ever sporting results in the UK and won the most medals.’

The chief executive of UK Sport, Liz Nicholl, added: ‘In the hugely competitive world of elite sport it is vital our athletes remain at the peak of their performance and able to perform in key competitions. Injury prevention and recovery are therefore critical to an athlete’s success on the world stage, which is why through our twinned approach of providing support to athletes through the home country sports institutes and the Athlete Medical Scheme provided by Bupa, we are able to provide world class support to our elite athletes.’
