The BBC’s coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix won by Mclaren’s Lewis Hamilton drew in a peak audience of 7.4m.
The figures are a huge boost to the BBC especially as the race was on during the World Cup.
This represents the highest peak audience for 2010, beating this year’s previous highest of 6.1m for the Bahrain Grand Prix.
The race is the second highest peak audience for all BBC F1 coverage, with the highest being the 2009 Brazilian Grand Prix which peaked at 8.9m.
Viewing figures for the opening match of the World Cup in South Africa drew in 10m viewers in the host country alone.
