Car-crash tragedy has hit South Africa on the eve of the World Cup after three Britons and Nelson Mandela’s great-granddaughter have been killed in road accidents.

Zenani Mandela, 13, was one of Mandela’s nine great-grandchildren and died when travelling home after the concert in Soweto.

The car overturned as it came off a slip road on the M1 motorway, which travels through Johannesburg city centre.

The car’s driver has been arrested and police said they were investigating the situation.

Three British students died following a road crash in Nelspruit, whilst 17 are injured, again raising concerns over the safety of South African roads.

Teachers and students from the college in Leicestershire were on the bus, along with a South African guide.

Thursday’s World Cup concert had drawn tens of thousands to Soweto’s Orlando Stadium, and traffic in the area had been busy into the early hours.

The event featured a cast of international stars including Colombian singer Shakira, the Black Eyed Peas and Alicia Keys.
