The EFL has announced that it has rescheduled the Carabao Cup Final in the hope of seeing fans in attendance.
The match, which was originally scheduled for Sunday 28th February, will now take place on Sunday 25th April at 4pm with the hope of having ‘as many supporters in attendance as possible’.
In a statement, the EFL said: “The number of fans permitted will be dependent on government guidance in place at the time and it is hoped that moving the date to later in the year will give clubs and their fans the best opportunity to attend in person.”
The announcement was made with the competition currently at the quarter final stage, with four games to be played across Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd December.
The competition’s semi-final stage is still scheduled to take place in the week commencing 4th January. Those ties were already set to take place on a single-leg basis instead of the two-legged format the competition usually uses for the semi-final stage.
The move comes days after the government announced new tier four restrictions where no fans would be allowed in attendance at matches. Currently, outdoor sporting events can take place in front of up to 2,000 fans in tier two areas, while up to 4,000 are permitted in tier one areas.
Three of the quarter final ties to be played this week will take place in London which is in tier four, with the other – Everton v Manchester United – scheduled for tier two Merseyside.
