Cardiff Rugby has filed a notice of intent (NOI) to appoint administrators, with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) poised to support the club.
The Welsh professional team served the NOI, a formal court document signalling intent to enter administration, following an emergency meeting between staff and chief executive Richard Holland.
The WRU has stated it will work closely with the Cardiff board and administrators to safeguard professional rugby in Cardiff and is expected to initially assist with the day-to-day running of the organisation.
This development occurs just over a year after investment group Helford Capital Limited completed a takeover in January 2024, acquiring an 84.55% shareholding led by British businessmen Phil Kempe and Neal Griffith.
The news also precedes an anticipated new Professional Rugby Agreement between the WRU and the four Welsh regions (Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys, Scarlets), intended to run until 2029 under the One Wales strategy, which relies on the regions operating as independent, privately invested businesses.
In a statement, Cardiff Rugby, said, ‘Cardiff Rugby can confirm notice of intention to appoint administrators has been filed. Please rest assured everything possible is being done to protect our employees and the future of the club. We have a plan in place and we will update you as soon as possible.’
The WRU, added, ‘We are aware Cardiff Rugby have confirmed notice of intention to appoint administrators, and we are working closely with the Cardiff Board and the administrators to safeguard the future of professional rugby in Cardiff.’
Lynn Glaister, Chair, CF10 Rugby Trust, said, “Whilst shocked at the news we now need to look to the future.”
