Global oil brand Castrol has sprung a shock move into football sponsorship after
tying up a deal to sponsor the UEFA 2008 European Championships.
Castrol’s deal with UEFA marks the first significant move into sport
sponsorship outside of motorsports that the brand has made, the exclusive
contract covering a wide product category including lubricants, oils and fuels.
The move by Castrol into sport shakes up a category that has hitherto been
dominated by Shell and Castrol’s parent brand BP – and one which figures
prominently on the London 2012 organising committee’s sponsorship hit list.
In signing up for the 2008 European Championships, Castrol fills one of four
slots at the global event sponsor package level joining adidas, Continental, and
one more brand still to be announced.
These four brands sit below the six UEFA EUROTOP partners – Carlsberg,
Coca-Cola, JVC, Hyundai-Kia, MasterCard and McDonald’s – who have access to a
comprehensive package of sponsorship rights across all of UEFA’s properties.
Eight National Supporter sponsors will also be added to the UEFA 2008
portfolio with four coming from each of the two host countries – Austria and
Switzerland.
