Former FIFA official, Jérôme Champagne has announced that he will run for FIFA president despite withdrawing from the process in the lead up to May’s election.

The Frenchman, who has held four different posts at FIFA between 1999 and 2010, said the events of recent months have renewed his determination, even though he failed to be nominated to take over from Sepp Blatter earlier this year.

Champagne has now returned to the running ahead of Monday’s deadline for the 26th February election and joins Michel Platini – subject to suspension – Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein, David Nakhid and Sheikh Al-Khalifa who are all looking to become the next president of FIFA.

In his letter, Champagne said: “We need to save FIFA and its role of governance and redistribution, which is in danger at a time when they are needed the most. We must also restore FIFA’s credibility and prepare it for the challenges of an ever-evolving world.”
