Chelsea FC is being investigated by the Premier League for potential financial rule breaches during Roman Abramovich’s time as owner of the club.

The US-led consortium that purchased Chelsea from Russian oligarch Abramovich last summer has reported its own club to UEFA and the Premier League following the takeover, according to Sky News.

It is reported that millions of pounds worth of payments was made to offshore companies during the Abramovich era. The payments were also not registered on the club’s annual financial report to the Football Association, Premier League and UEFA.

Additionally, there is at least one payment made to a player’s family that is also being scrutinised.

The Premier League football club has not been charged by the Premier League but if it is found guilty of rule breaches potential repercussions could include fines or a points deduction.

This follows a Chelsea’s £8.6m fine from UEFA in July which was given for ‘submitting incomplete financial information’ between 2012 and 2019.

Russian oligarch and politician Abramovich was owner of the London club for 19 years before selling the club to a US-based consortium headed up by Todd Boehly in May 2022.

The sale was forced through after Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
