West Ham and Sheffield United are reportedly close to agreeing a deal over compensation to end the long-running saga over the validity of striker Carlos Tevez.

United were judged to be entitled to recompense after Tevez helped keep West Ham in the Premier League in 2007, despite being signed ineligibly. A formal hearing was arranged for next week but the clubs have been looking to avoid it.

It is believed the clubs will release a joint statement after agreeing a series of payments for a total £25m.

Lord Griffiths chaired the arbitration panel that concluded last September that Sheffield United should be entitled to compensation from West Ham following the former’s relegation from the Premier League.
