Coors Brewers, the parent company of Carling, has renewed the beer brand’s sponsorship of the League Cup with the Football League until 2012 in a new multi-million pound deal.

Coors Brewers, which will have been sponsors for 14 years by the end of the deal, agreed an extension to the existing contract with the Football League meaning that the competition will remain the Carling Cup for a further three season.

Prior to Carling’s involvement, the tournament had historically suffered from a revolving door of title sponsors with the Milk Marketing Board, Rumbelows and Worthington’s amongst the brands that have lent their name to the competition for comparatively small periods of time.

This season’s competition is at the semi-final stage with the next games taking place in early January.

Holders Tottenham Hotspur face giant-killers Burnley in one tie while Manchester United take on Derby County in the other.

Despite many of the top Premier League teams fielding second-string sides in the competition, the Football League remain positive that the Carling Cup is a ‘highly coveted piece of silverware’.
