Coral has commissioned a poll to see how many Olympic fans had transferred their passion for London 2012 to take up a new sport this winter, and it appears the Olympics may well have had a lasting impression on British sport with 72% of the public questioned revealing they have done just that.

Unsurprisingly, following the success of BBC Sports Personality of the Year Bradely Wiggins, cycling has been particularly popular – as 15% of Brits reveal they have recently taken up cycling.

Olympic swimming has also made a splash on Brits as 13% have taken it up since London 2012.

Mo Farah’s golden display in the 5,000m and 10,000m has encouraged nearly 13% of 18-24 year olds to start running in an attempt to keep fit.

Simon Clare of Coral commented: ‘It’s no surprise to see that cycling has had such a significant impact on Brits as the drama of the velodrome and the historic fetes of Wiggo were massive hits during the summer.’

‘Jessica Ennis, Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah’s super Saturday gold medals captivated the nation, so perhaps it is a surprise that more people have not taken up track and field.’
